The Golden Eagles men's soccer team entered Friday's match with Menlo College looking to snap a season-high four match losing streak. But the Golden Eagles fell came up short with a late rally, losing by a final of 3-2.
Menlo jumped out to an early lead on a goal by Andrew Cota (39th minute), assisted by Nicholas Krahnke, after a relatively even first half. After the Oaks took the 1-0 lead into the half, things looked like the match would remain a low scoring affair, until the Oaks broke through with two more goals in the midway through the second half. Alex Vukic scored with a shot to the bottom right corner on an assist from Giuseppe Frattaroli in the 67th minute. Andrew Cota extended the lead to 3-0 when he scored in the 77th minute on an assist by Christian Abrego.
There was no give-up with these Golden Eagles who turned up the pressure late in the second looking to fight their way back into the match. La Sierra's pressure was rewarded when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 81st minute, and Joel Hernandez did the rest to find the back of the net and cut the lead to 3-1.
The Golden Eagles crept closer after a corner kick resulted in an own goal by the Oaks and cut the lead to 3-2, in the 87th minute. But that would be as close as things would get and they would eventually fall to Menlo by the final of 3-2.
La Sierra, now 4-7, will have a week off between matches before heading back up to northern California. The Golden Eagles will travel to UC Santa Cruz next weekend. They will play Rowan University (Glassboro, NJ) on Friday afternoon followed by the Banana Slugs on Sunday, before returning home. The next home match for the Golden Eagles will be on October 10, when the team hosts Bethesda University.
