Baseball Welcomes Largest Recruiting Class In School History

The 2012-13 Golden Eagles baseball team assembled to celebrate the signing of the largest recruiting class in the history of Golden Eagles Athletics. On Monday evening, September 3, approximately 90-100 student-athletes and their families enjoyed a delicious dinner, and the opportunity to meet and get acquainted with one another.

The dinner was in celebration of the 29 new student-athletes to the baseball program, the Golden Eagles Athletic Department and La Sierra University. The newly signed players were invited to bring their immediate families, while the returning players on the roster were allowed to bring a guest of their choosing.

Attendees enjoyed a meal prepared by Anna Gamboa, wife of Gabriel Gamboa, the Golden Eagles men's baseball coach. The guests were hosted at Le Rendezvous Restaurant, located in San Bernardino. The restaurant is owned and operated by Coach Gamboa and his family.

Gamboa, who is entering his third year as the men's baseball coach, and his staff have spent countless hours building relationships and recruiting, maintaining a path towards building an increasingly competitive program. "We haven't won as much as we would have liked, but we have competed with some of the best schools in the NAIA who have many more [resources than our program]," said Gamboa. "We've been more competitive, where, in year's past, La Sierra was looked at as a school you would schedule for an easy win."

This past off-season, Gamboa and his staff set a goal of doubling the size of their roster. Gamboa gives a lot of the credit to assistant coach Mike Moheit. "I assigned him the duty of organizing the recruiting and he knocked it out of the park," said Gamboa.

Needless to say, Coach Gamboa and his team are anxious to get this season started. With practices underway, optimism abounds. "This year's recruiting class is a very talented group, it may very well be the most athletic (baseball) group the school has ever had," added Gamboa. "I can't wait to [start the season]. We are going to surprise a lot of school with our depth and our ability."

The 2012-13 Golden Eagles baseball team is scheduled to open their season with a double-header at Vanguard University on January 21, 2013. The Golden Eagles first home game will take place on January 27, 2013.
