Riverside, CA - The Association of Independent Institutions (AII) has named two Golden Eagles to the Division II All Conference Basketball Team, as announced this afternoon. Natalia Hawthorne was named to the women's All Conference First Team while Bennett Shaw was named to the men's All Conference Second Team.
Hawthorne led the Golden Eagles in scoring, steals, free throw percentage, and 3-point shooting percentage. The junior guard, from Rancho Cucamonga, led the team by averaging 17.3 points per game (#3 in the AII, #21 NAIA DII) and 2.61 steals per game (#2 in the AII, #30 NAIA DII) with a total of 73 steals on the season (#29 NAIA DII). She finished the season shooting 34-percent from beyond the arc (54-for-158) and also shot 73-percent from the free throw line. Hawthorne had a season high 32 points in a loss to Arizona Christian University.
Hawthorne served as a co-captain of her team this season and helped lead the team to a 14-16 record, setting a record for the most wins for a women's basketball team in school history. She, along with her teammates, was instrumental in improving on a 5-24 record in the 2011-12 season.
Shaw, also a guard from Rancho Cucamonga, led his team in scoring. He averaged 14.9 points per game, scoring 433 points on the season. Shaw also led the team in 3-point shots made (50) and assists (76). He also led the team in free throws made and attempted (85-for-113) while shooting 75-percent from the charity stripe.
La Sierra University is in its final season as a member of the Association of Independent Institutions. The AII is made up 13 colleges/universities who are not affiliated with a specific conference. Starting next season (2013-14), the Golden Eagles will compete in the California Pacific Conference.
