Riverside, Calif. - The men's soccer team fell to 0-2 on the season with a 3-1 loss to Hope International University. It was the home opener for the Golden Eagles who opened their season with a loss at Vanguard University last Thursday. Wednesday's match was the season opener for Hope International (1-0).
The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Kenny Bonanken, in the 32nd minute, off of a rebound inside the box.
La Sierra was able to take the 1-0 lead into the halftime break, but were unable to withstand a Hope International squad who started with second half with a flurry.
The Royals nearly scored the tying goal, on a shot that sailed just over the crossbar, just minutes into the second half.
But Hope International finally put one in the back of the net, in the 58th minute, when Mario Perez put a header past goalkeeper Roberto Rodriquez, off of a corner kick from Emmanuel Quintero, tying the score at 1-1.
The Royals took the lead just six minutes later when Jesse Perez scored off of another corner kick from Quintero in the 64th minute, for a 2-1 lead.
Hope International added an insurance goal, in the 89th minute, by Eduardo Zavala to push the lead to 3-1.
The Royals outshot the Golden Eagles 14-9 (8-5 SOG) for the match, including an 11-0 advantage on corner kicks.
The Golden Eagles will now head out on the road for five straight matches before returning to their home field on September 26. Their first match of the five-match road streak starts next Wednesday, when they travel to Eagle Rock, Calif., for a match-up with Occidental College, starting at 7pm.
