Glendale, AZ - The Golden Eagles men's soccer team was looking to rebound from a 2-1 loss at Embry Riddle this past Wednesday. It was their first loss of the season. On Saturday night, La Sierra travelled to Arizona Christian University and from the get-go, the focused group of Golden Eagles capitalized on four second half goals to defeat Arizona Christian by a final of 4-0.
After the two teams played to a scoreless first half, the Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard when Roman Santiago scored (51st minute) his first goal of the season, unassisted, with a direct kick from the top of the penalty box. Dakota Shelton extended the lead with a header off of a thrown in from Jordan Davis in the 68th minute. La Sierra didn't stop there, they added a third goal in the 80th minute, scored by Diego Fontes, assisted by Kenneth Henry. Santaigo closed the scoring, in the 86th minute, with his second unassisted goal of the evening.
Goalkeeper Peter Martinez picked up the shutout win, while making a total of five save on seven total shots. The Golden Eagles finished the match with a total of 27 total shots and 14 shots on goal. Fontes led the team with eight shots and three shots on goal. Santiago added seven shots with four shots on goal.
The Golden Eagles push their record to 3-1 on the season with the win. Next up for the Golden Eagles will be another road match at Biola University. The Eagles are 0-1 on the season, after losing their season opener to Azusa Pacific University, 2-1.
La Sierra will host Pacific Union College in their home opener next Saturday night, September 8, at 8pm.
