After a week between games the Golden Eagles women's basketball team was looking to rebound from their loss to Biola University last Saturday night. Tonight, they were on the road once again, at Vanguard University who is currently ranked No. 4 in the Division I NAIA Pre-season National Rankings. The Lions proved to be too much for the Golden Eagles, as they cruised to a 44-81 victory.
With neither team settling into their offensive rhythm Vanguard utilized put-backs to sneak out to a 20-5 lead after holding the Golden Eagles scoreless for a six-minute stretch. The Lions trapping half-court zone defense proved to give La Sierra fits for much of the first half, as Vanguard would take a 34-13 lead into the half.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles seemed to gain a bit of confidence with a determined effort, but could not match the size and strength of Vanguard. The Lions dominated the boards with a 70-40 rebounding margin, including a 31-10 margin on the offensive boards which resulted in 22 second chance points for Vanguard compared to only six for La Sierra.
Both teams struggled from the field tonight. The Lions shot 37-percent from the field while the Golden Eagles shot 25-percent from the field unable to capitalize on 16 lay-up opportunities throughout the game. La Sierra shot a higher percentage from beyond the arc, 28-percent to 12-percent for Vanguard.
The women's basketball team falls to 1-3 on the season. Tonight was the start of a busy week for the Golden Eagles who will play host to Hope International University on Monday evening, followed by a road game at Claremont Mudd-Scripps on Thursday, and another home game on Friday afternoon against Menlo College. Monday's game is a 7:30pm start.
