Riverside, CA - After having their season opening games rained out last weekend, the Golden Eagles softball team finally opened their 2013 season this afternoon. La Sierra played host to Hope International University, eager to get their season started. With a revamped roster, the Golden Eagles wasted no time getting on the scoreboard on their way to a 6-2 victory in Game 1. La Sierra settled for the split by dropping the second game of the double-header by a final of 8-0.
In Game 1 the Golden Eagles got on the board early and never looked back. They pushed a run across in the first inning, when Briana Manzanero reached on an infield single then advanced to second on an error. Manzanero then stole third base and scored on a two-out double by Monique Villasenor.
La Sierra finished the game with six runs on six hits, committing one error in the game. The Golden Eagles spread the offensive around with all six hits coming from six different players. Villasenor, Halley Nicholas, and Ali Rios each notched an RBI in the victory. Outfielder Ashlee Gutierrez picked up one of the six hits and scored two of the team's six runs.
Leading the way to the Game 1 victory was pitcher Aleena Bahling (1-0) who went a complete game giving up five hits and two earned runs.
In Game 2 the Golden Eagles struggled to get their offense going, as pitcher Mea Flores pitched a three-hit shutout, for the 8-0 victory. The Royals jumped out to the early lead, scoring five runs in the first two innings and capitalized on six errors by La Sierra.
Pitcher Joselyn Salazar (0-1) picked up the loss in Game 2, giving up six runs on nine hits in four innings pitched.
The Golden Eagles open the season at 1-1. They will play host to the University of Redlands this coming Sunday. The double-header will begin at 11am.
