Merced, Calif. - The women's volleyball team advanced to the Cal Pac Championship match by defeating Simpson University in straight sets this afternoon (25-15, 25-11, 25-23). It was a relatively quick affair that now allows the Golden Eagles time to rest for tonight's conference championship.
Lina Semaia led the team and all players in kills, tallying a total of 16 in the match. Robyn Miller added eight kills, while Ashley Baumgaertel pitched in with six kills and three block assists.
Colleen Stafford guided the offense with 31 assists, nine digs, and five kills. Chantal Washington led the team in digs with 14 digs to go along with four service aces. Ana Flores also contributed 11 digs in today's win.
The Golden Eagles out-hit the Red Hawks 43 kills to 29 kills. The Red Hawks finished with 17 attack errors to only 11 for La Sierra, while the teams tallied 110-109 attack attempts respectively.
With the win, La Sierra now improves their record to 22-8 on the season (12-1 in the Cal Pac). With Menlo's straight set victory over Pacific Union College, the championship match will now pit the No.1 seed against the No. 2 seed.
The Golden Eagles and the Oaks split their two meetings during the regular season, with each team winning on their home floor. The Oaks handed La Sierra their only conference loss in a five set win (25-23, 23-25, 24-26, 25-20, 13-15) back in mid-September. The Golden Eagles defeated the Oaks, the defending conference champions, in straight sets (25-18, 25-21, 26-24) back on October 24, handing the Oaks their lone conference loss of the season.
The top two teams in the Cal Pac will meet one final time to decide the Cal Pac title. The championship match will be played on Hostetler Court on the campus of UC Merced, on Saturday night, at 7:00 pm.
