Riverside, Calif. - The men's basketball team returned to their home court, after playing three straight road games, since their season opening overtime win at home against Westmont College. The Golden Eagles held off the Pacific University Boxers for the 70-68 win.
Today the Golden Eagles played host to Pacific University, an NCAA Division III program, from Forest Grove, Oregon. The Boxers were playing their third game in as many days, having split their first two games of the season this weekend.
It was also a quick turnaround for La Sierra who was coming off of a loss at Chapman University last night.
The Boxer jumped out to an early seven point lead midway through the first half. La Sierra climbed back to within a basket, before the Boxers extended their lead once again, until a CJ Goldsmith three point jumper gave the Golden Eagles a two-point lead, 35-33, at the half.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles were able to solve the zone defense to convert some easy baskets and push their lead to six points. After the two teams exchanged some baskets, La Sierra pushed their lead to 51-40 with under eight minutes to play.
But the Boxers weren't going to go away quietly. With under four minutes remaining the Boxers erased the lead and tied the game at 61-61.
On the subsequent possession, Daveon Woods knocked down a three point shot from the left wing to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Ian Mozeleski's free throws sealed the victory, and improved the Golden Eagles record to 2-3 on the year.
Both teams were on target all afternoon from beyond the arc. Each team connected on 11 3-point shots. The Golden Eagles were 11-for-25 (44%), while the Boxers were 11-for-24 (46%).
Freshmen Wolfgang Wood led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting, to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Mozeleski added 15 points, while Woods finished with 14 points.
La Sierra will be out of action this week as they prepare for their Cal Pac opener this coming Saturday night, versus Menlo College. The men's team will play the second game of a doubleheader, starting at approximately 8:00pm.
