With the memory of their season coming to an end last year, in a six-point loss at the hands of Biola University, the Golden Eagles were anxious for this year's only meeting between the two teams.
It was a game that was back-and-forth for the first 10 minutes, until Biola went on a 9-1 run, at the midway point of the first half, with the score tied at 16-16. The Golden Eagles answered back with an 11-2 run of their own to take a 28-27 lead with 2:44 remaining in the half. By the end of the first half, Biola enjoyed a slight 34-33 lead.
Similar to the first half, the two teams went back-and-forth for the first 10 minutes plus of the second half. With 9:25 remaining in the game, Brittani Walker's layup gave the Golden Eagles a 54-53 lead, it was a lead they would never relinquish. Over the next six minutes La Sierra would go on a 15-3 run, capped off by a three-point make by Hawthorne to give the Golden Eagles a 13-point lead, their largest of the game, with 3:30 remaining.
Biola made a final 12-5 run to finish the game, but La Sierra was able to hold on for the victory.
In addition to her game high 36 points, Hawthorne also contributed five steals and two assists. Joirdan Jones finished with a complete game with10 points and a season high eight rebounds and seven assists. Victoria Lowe and Leilani Tuani-Fifita contributed nine points each. Brittani Walker and Lowe also tallied seven rebounds.
La Sierra improves to 2-5 on the season. The Golden Eagles will open Cal Pac play this coming Saturday night when they play host to Menlo College. The women will play the first game of a double-header. Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm.
