Atherton, Calif. - Playing in the second game of this afternoon's doubleheader with Menlo College, the men's basketball team fell short to the Oaks, 85-71. The Golden Eagles were looking to avenge their mid-November loss to the Oaks, which saw their second half comeback fall just short.
In today's match-up, the Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 12-6 lead, in the first seven minutes of play.
Over the next seven minutes, Menlo answered back with a 15-5 run, taking a 21-17 lead with just over nine minutes to play in the first half. For the remainder of the first half, it was back-and-forth with Menlo retaining their lead and even extending it to 40-33.
The first seven minutes of the second half proved to be much of the same, until the Golden Eagles were able to mount a mini-run that cut the lead to just two points (53-51). But the Oaks answered with an 8-0 run of their own, pushing the lead to double-digits, 61-51, at the midway point of the second half.
For the remainder of the game, the Golden Eagles were able to cut the lead to 8-points on a few occasions, but that would be as close as La Sierra would get.
Daveon Woods led the team in scoring with 16 points. Ian Mozeleski connected on 4-of-10 3-point shots and converted 2-of-3 free throws, to finish with 14 points. Taylor Scharffenberg tallied 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field.
CJ Goldsmith led the team with eight rebounds to go along with his six points, while Garrett Kiefer scored eight points and pulling down seven rebounds. Rounding out the scoring for the Golden Eagles was Wolfgang Wood who finished with nine points and four rebounds.
The men's basketball team falls to 1-2 in Cal Pac conference play (3-14 overall). The team will travel to Pacific Union College tomorrow night, for a Cal Pac match-up with the Pioneers, with tip-off scheduled at approximately 8:30pm, following the women's game. The Golden Eagles defeated the Pioneer, in mid-December, by a final of 79-61.
