Rocklin, Calif. - The men's basketball team was looking to keep their conference postseason hopes alive in tonight's road match-up with William Jessup University. But the Warriors completed the season sweep of the Golden Eagles with a 65-50 win tonight, in Rocklin, Calif.
After the Golden Eagles' Garrett Kiefer knocked down a 3-point shot at the outset of the game, giving La Sierra a 3-2 lead, it would prove to be their only lead of the night.
The Warriors came out running and pushing the ball up the floor and never let up, jumping out to an early 19-9 lead by the midway point of the first half. A lay-up by Kelton Newman gave the Warriors their largest lead of the half, at 30-17, with 3:08 remaining in the half. The Golden Eagles were able to shave a few points off the lead by the halftime break, but it was William Jessup who enjoyed a 32-23 cushion at the break.
But the Golden Eagles weren't about to go down easy. A CJ Goldsmith basket cut the lead to 38-34 by the 13:56 point of the second half.
After the two teams exchanged baskets over the next few minutes of the game, the Warriors extended their lead back up to double-digits, 50-40, with 7:42 remaining.
Over the remaining minutes of the game, the Golden Eagles were unable to cut into the Warriors lead, as their relentless attacking offense extended the lead to 63-44 with 2:09 remaining, on their way to victory.
Wolfgang Wood led the team in scoring with 12 points, followed by Daveon Woods' 11 points. Garrett Kiefer scored nine points and collected six rebounds, while Lyombo Loundu and Xavier Spells each contributed six points. Loundu also led the team with seven total rebounds.
With the Golden Eagles loss and Menlo's win over Pacific Union last night, La Sierra was officially eliminated from postseason play.
The men's basketball team is now 3-7 in Cal Pac play (5-22 overall). The team will look to finish the season out on a high note with a road game at Simpson University on Saturday night, before they return home to close the season out with a home game against UC Merced next Thursday evening. Thursday's game will also serve as Senior Night for the Golden Eagles.
