Santa Clarita, Calif. - The Golden Eagle baseball team dropped both contests of an afternoon doubleheader at The Master's College today. The Mustangs defeated La Sierra 14-1 (5 innings) and 7-2 (7 innings).
The Master's put together a dominating performance in the first game of the doubleheader, as they held the Golden Eagles to just one hit and one run in the ball game. The lone hit came off the bat of Michael Gonzales who spoiled the no-hit bid with a two-out double to right field.
The Mustangs scored nine of their 14 runs in the 3rd inning. They also collected eight of their 13 hits in the frame and cruised on to victory. With the 10-run mercy rule in effect, the game ended after the 5th inning.
In Game 2, La Sierra jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, when Matt Valenzuela scored on a fielder's choice. But the Mustangs answered right back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
The Master's added two more runs in the 2nd followed by another run in the 3rd inning, to take a 4-1 lead.
The Golden Eagles cut into the lead with a run in the top half of the 5th inning. when Michael Gonzales hit a 2-out single up the middle and later scored on a single by Luis Holguin.
But the Mustangs all but secured the victory by answering with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
La Sierra scored their two runs on two hits, while the Mustangs finished with seven runs on nine hits.
The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 2-25 on the season. They will have a couple of days off before hitting the road once again. The team will travel to Fresno Pacific University this weekend for a three game series starting on Friday afternoon.
