The stars were out Tuesday night as La Sierra University honored their student athletes.
The athletic department was proud to announce that this years teams won almost three times as many games overall as the previous years six teams. In addition Associate AD Kip Shipley noted that the Press Enterprise Performer of the Week award went to a La Sierra athletes 11 times over the course of the year. This is more wins than Cal Baptist, UCR and Cal State San Bernardino combined.
Each coach presented his or her players with their varsity letters and also several team awards. One special highlight of the evening was men's basketball coach Derek Robbins, awarding La Sierra's first ever conference MVP. Daveon Woods, MVP of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, led the men's basketball team to the conference championship, also a first for La Sierra.
Other major awards presented included the Athletic Departments Rookie of the Year to Women's Basketball player Joirdan Jones, and Mens Basketball player Taylor Schaffenberg. New this year was the creation of the Golden Eagle Award. This award is to be presented yearly to the male and female athlete that not only preformed at the highest level on the field or court, but who also performed to a high level in the classroom. In addition they had to have shown outstanding leadership qualities and represented La Sierra well in the community. Women's volleyball player Samantha Arriaran was the overwhelming choice for the inaugural Golden Eagle award, as was Men's soccer player David Nolan.
