James Ross scored the
game-winning goal four minutes into the first overtime period to lead La
Sierra University to a 2-1 win over Occidental College (SCIAC D-III) on
Saturday night.
The goal, James' first of the season, came on an
18-yard shot on the 96th minute of the game. The win improves the
Golden Eagles record to 4-1-0 on the season.
"I give the tigers a lot of credit, Coach Lafaurie and his
coaching staff are doing a great job of getting their kids to believe in
what they are doing. But I am glad that our boys managed to compete and
were able to get the win" said Coach Olivas.
Doug Pentland got
the Occidental College men's soccer team out in front with a goal in the
30th minute. The Occidental Tigers (0-2) took the lead into halftime
before the referee awarded La Sierra a penalty kick on a foul in the
box. Shane Shelton scored from the penalty spot to even out the score.
The score remained the same, sending the game into overtime. La Sierra
managed to score early in the first period of overtime when Kenny
Bonanken found James Ross for a shot that was place just beyond the
reach of the Tigers keeper for the game winner.
Coach Olivas believes that the Golden eagles will continue to improve,
and that games like this one will make the group better, "Even though we
were not able to get the offense going, we still managed to find a way
to win the game, we will get back to sessions and we will look to
prepare to be ready for our next game"
