Prescott, AZ - Playing their third road match to start the season, the Golden Eagles men's soccer team travelled to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for a non-conference match against the Eagles. In the battle of (Golden) Eagles versus Eagles, Embry-Riddle handed La Sierra their first loss of the season, with a final of 2-1.
The Golden Eagles entered the match, looking to avenge last season's loss (3-0) against their former conference competitor. But it was Embry-Riddle who jumped out to the early lead and eventually hung on for the victory.
Fabio Pena put Embry-Riddle on the scoreboard with a goal in
the 33rd minute, assisted by Jacob John Brech. Brech added a goal of his own, five minutes
later, on an assist from Isaac Sanchez on a corner kick, to push the lead to
2-0. The Golden Eagles were able to
break through with a goal late in the second half when Joel Herndandez scored, on an corner kick, assisted by Diego Fontes, to cut the lead in half. With just over five minutes left in the match, time would run out on the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles will look to turn the page when they travel to Arizona Christian (Glendale, AZ) on Saturday night. La Sierra defeated Arizona Christian in both meetings last season. The Golden Eagles home opener is now scheduled to take place on Saturday night, September 8, at 8pm, when they host Pacific Union College.
