San Marcos, CA - In a much-anticipated match-up between La Sierra University and No. 9 CSU San Marcos, it was the Cougars who jumped out to the early lead and never looked back. The two teams met in the season opening La Sierra University Tournament, when the Golden Eagles pulled out a five-game victory. A month and a half later, the Cougars evened the score with a three-game win over La Sierra, 25-13, 22-25, 20-25.
Lupe Garcia led the way with eight kills and five digs. Shelby Madigan added seven kills and three digs, while Lina Semaia tallied six kills and five digs. One of the biggest differences in the two matches aside from the outcome, was the Golden Eagles hitting percentage. In the five-game win La Sierra had an attack percentage of .291 as opposed to tonight's percentage of .043.
Setter Colleen Stafford finished with a team-high 24 assists and six digs.
The Cougars controlled the play at the net with 12 more kills than the Golden Eagles (38-26) and out-blocking La Sierra 10-4. As a team, San Marcos finished with a .250 hitting percentage and added 10 service aces.
La Sierra falls to 14-7 on the season, having concluded their road or neutral court schedule with a record of 9-6. Their remaining eight matches will all be played at home, beginning with the October 9 match against Westmont College and including another match against CSU San Marcos on October 24.
