Riverside, CA - Looking to stay in the playoff picture, the Golden Eagles traveled to CSU San Marcos this afternoon to face the Cougars for the first time this season. With only two matches remaining, La Sierra found themselves in a must-win situation. On this afternoon, Golden Eagles prevailed in a 2-1 victory to stay in the hunt.
The two teams played to a scoreless first half, before Roman Santiago put the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard, with an unassisted goal in the 49th minute. Santiago scored on a free kick that he was able to sneak by the San Marcos defense.
Scott Rice scored the equalizer, assisted by Alex Brunsell, in the 58th minute. But Santiago would factor in once again, assisting on the game-winning goal, by Bryan Gutierrez in the 69th minute.
La Sierra hung on in the final twenty minutes, for their third win in the last four matches. Their overall record improves to 7-8-1. They are currently in fourth place in the Association of Independent Institutions (AII) standings, just percentage points ahead of Houston-Victoria and just percentage points behind Rochester.
The playoff picture might become clearer this coming week, when the 2nd Modified Ratings Percentage Index (MRPI) is released this coming Wednesday. The Golden Eagles will close out their regular season next Sunday, October 28, at 1pm, when they play host to Embry-Riddle University. Embry-Riddle defeated La Sierra, 2-1, back in late August. Their final regular season match will also be Senior Day for the Golden Eagles seniors who will closing out their collegiate careers.
