La Sierra continued to build on their recent momentum. Tonight's match was the seventh of nine straight home matches, to closeout the regular season. Needless to say, their home court has been treating them well. Playing with a renewed confidence and energy level, the Golden Eagles secured their fifth victory, during this stretch of seven straight home matches, with this latest dominating performance versus Johnson & Wales University, 25-16, 25-15, 25-16.
The Golden Eagles did benefit from a Wildcat team that finished the match with a negative .022 hitting percentage, with 24 kills and 26 attack errors on 91 total attempts. Conversely, La Sierra had 35 kills on only 12 attack errors on 85 total attempts, good for a .271 hitting percentage. As a team, the Golden Eagles had eight block assists and two solo blocks.
Setter Colleen Stafford directed the offense with 23 total assists. The Golden Eagles spread out the offense among the top four hitters. Shelby Madigan and Siao Malepeai each finished with seven kills in the match, while Lupe Garcia and Lina Semaia added six kills each in the effort. Joining the fun was Ashley Baumgaertel who pitched in with four kills (on five total attempts) to go along with her game-high three block assists.
The Golden Eagles will have a quick turnaround as they complete a busy weekend, by hosting Embry-Riddle University tomorrow morning at 11:00am. This will be the first and only meeting between the two teams this season. La Sierra defeated Embry-Riddle last season in a three-game sweep. Embry-Riddle is currently 10-12 on the season and most recently coming off of a loss to California State University-San Marcos, in three straight games.
A win in any of the two remaining regular season matches would give the Golden Eagles their twentieth win for the second year in a row. La Sierra will close out the regular season on Wednesday, with a match against CSU-San Marcos, at 7:30pm.
