Riverside, CA - The men's basketball team opened their 2012-13 season at home tonight against Biola University. After winning twelve of their final 15 games of the season to finish last season, La Sierra was looking to keep building on last year's momentum. Tonight, Biola got the best of the Golden Eagles with a 75-50 win.
With half of their active roster, returning from last season, La Sierra worked to keep pace with Biola who finished last season with a 27-9 record. The two teams did not play one another last season. The last time the Golden Eagles played Biola University was over six years ago, at the least. Current and updated records show no record of the two teams meeting in the last six years, but it is unclear exactly when the two teams met prior to the 2005-06 season.
Biola University took a 13-point cushion into the half and would eventually build on that lead on their way to the 75-50 victory. The Golden Eagles shot just under 33 percent on 20-of-61 shooting from the field. Biola shot the ball slightly better at just under 41 percent on 22-of-54 shooting. Eight of Biola's 22 field goals were three-point baskets and they also capitalized on 23-of-30 free throws. In comparison the Golden Eagles only got to the line for 16 total attempts, making only seven free throws. The Golden Eagles did out-rebound Biola on the offensive end, 16-12, but were out-rebounded by only three total rebounds 40-37.
La Sierra balanced the scoring throughout their roster. Senior Joshua Zonker and sophomore C.J. Goldsmith led the Golden Eagles in scoring with eight points apiece. Zonker added nine rebounds to the lead the team. Guard Bennett Shaw added seven points, five assists, two rebounds, and one steal prior to fouling out of the game in 24 minutes of play. Limbo Lound, Garrett Kiefer, and Carleton Coleman each pitched in with six points each. Coleman also finished with five rebounds.
The men's basketball team will have a quick turn-around, as they will host the Afghanistan National Team in an exhibition game tomorrow afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 4pm.
