San Bernardino, CA - Looking to rebound from Friday's loss to Menlo College, the Golden Eagles women's basketball team traveled to Cal State San Bernardino. La Sierra was looking to duplicate a solid effort against the Coyotes after holding Menlo to just 63 points, for a team that had been averaging over 90 points in their first three games. But the Golden Eagles have had trouble taking care of the basketball thus far this season, and that proved to be the story once again in a 66-46 exhibition loss to San Bernardino.
Tonight, was the official season-opener for the NCAA Division II program, who jumped out the early lead over La Sierra. The Golden Eagles found themselves down by 18 at the half, but made a push in the second half to cut the lead to 11 points with just over five minutes to play. But they Coyotes pushed back with a 6-0 run, cruising their way to a 66-46 victory.
Junior guard Natalia Hawthorne led the Golden Eagles with 10 points. Lina Semaia added eight points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, in her first game of the season since joining the team at the conclusion of the volleyball season. Shelby Madigan and Chantal Washington also saw their first action of the season and were also teammates of Semaia on the Golden Eagles women's volleyball team. Jocelyn Flores was the fourth member of the roster who suited up for the first time this season after being deemed eligible by the NAIA Eligibility Center earlier this morning.
The Golden Eagles utilized the exhibition game as an opportunity to get the entire squad some playing time. Only one player, freshmen Kristen Brummett, played more than 20 minutes in the game and only one player played less than 10 minutes. It is game experience that will hopefully come in useful as this young Golden Eagles squad continues to grow and develop.
La Sierra will take a break for the Thanksgiving Holiday before jumping back into action on Monday, November 26, when they host The Master's College.
