Men's Soccer posted it's biggest win to date Thursday evening, beating Occidental 2-1 in double overtime.
After a convincing road trip (2-0) in Arizona, the Golden Eagles dropped a hard fought game to Vanguard 3-2, before their overtime victory at Oxy which runs their record to an impressive 3-2. Coach Munoz was quick to point out that this is the best start for men's soccer in recient history.
The Occidental game started out slow with neither team scoring in the first half, thanks in part to excellent goalkeeping by the Golden Eagles Gabriel Ezqueda, who deflected a close range shot over the bar to keep things level .
But an early second half counter attack by Occidental put them up 1-0. Ezqueda came up big on the play, making the initial save, but the rebound was put away into an open net. La Sierra picked up the pace and equalized at the 70 minute mark on Freshaman Kenneth Bonanken's second goal of the season.
At the end of 90 minutes, the game was still locked at 1-1. 26 minutes later as the overtime period was winding down, freshman Jonas Ornelas connected on the ball after a scramble in front of the Oxy goal, and put away his first collegiate tally which gave LSU the victory.
LSU's home opener is set for Tuesday September 14, 7:00 vs. HOPE.
