Riverside, CA - After playing two consecutive overtime games, the Golden Eagles found themselves in another tight battle with Andrews University in the final game of the La Sierra University Basketball Tournament. But the Golden Eagles came up short, losing to the Cardinals 50-56.
It was a defensive battle for much of the game, with a mix of man-to-man and zone defenses. With the teams looking to control the tempo and perhaps create scoring opportunities in transition, by extending their defense to the full court. Andrews University took the slimmest of leads into the half, 24-23.
The first ten minutes of the second half was much like the first half, a back-and-forth game that consisted of six ties and eight lead changes. But in the latter half of the second half Andrews crept out to a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Cardinals capitalized on a rare six-point possession when they knocked down a 3-point shot while a foul was called, away from the ball, while the ball was in their air. Consequently, Andrews was awarded the ball out-of-bounds and subsequently hit another shot from beyond the arc to complete the six-point possession.
Tyler Woolridge had a game-high 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Freshmen guard Marcos Hazelwood, led the Golden Eagles with 14 points and seven rebounds, including 9-of-12 from the free throw line. Bennett Shaw added 11 points, five assists and four rebounds.
The Golden Eagles fall to 3-10 on the season. The will play the second game of a men's and women's double-header this Thursday evening at Arizona Christian University.
