Merced, CA - Playing their third and final game of their first tour of Northern California the Golden Eagles were looking to make it a 3-0 trip with an afternoon match-up at UC Merced. After getting off to a slow and sluggish start, the Golden Eagles used a second half surge to pull away for the 50-37 win.
La Sierra will not be an official participating member of the California Pacific Conference until next season, but in the meantime the Golden Eagles are playing an abbreviated Cal Pac schedule this year.
The weekend started with an upset victory over No. 24 Menlo College, followed by a win at Cal State Maritime, a tough gym to play in. Closing out the weekend, the Golden Eagles would travel to UC Merced this afternoon, for the quick turnaround, to face the Bobcats for the second time this season.
La Sierra played host to the UC Merced for their season opener back in October. The Bobcats used a second half surge of their own to force the game into overtime where the Golden Eagles were able to pull out a one point victory on that evening. On this afternoon La Sierra showed the sign of fatigue after a busy weekend. Midway through the first half, the Golden Eagles found themselves down by nine points to the Bobcats, before closing the gap to take a slim 21-18 lead into the half.
In the second half, both teams continued their struggles from the field, but the Golden Eagles were able to use their defense and control of the defensive boards to build a lead and take control of the ball game. In that second half, La Sierra was aggressive in getting to the foul line and converted 15 of 17 second half attempts.
Junior guard Natalia Hawthorn was the only player on either team to score in double figures with 20 points. Joirdan Jones and Jasmine Ruidera each scored seven points. Jones and Victoria Lowe led the Golden Eagles in rebounding with 7 apiece.
The women's basketball team push their record to 8-11 on the season and have now won six of their last seven games. They will look to keep the momentum going when they travel to Pomona-Pitzer this Thursday evening.
