Riverside, CA - The men's basketball team played host to Bethesda University tonight at the Alumni Pavilion. The Golden Eagles were looking to even the season series after losing to the Flames back in mid-January. After erasing a double-digit deficit, La Sierra cut the lead to two points in the final minute of the game, but came up short in the 66-72 loss.
Bethesda took a 10-point lead, 28-18, into the locker room at the half. Both teams struggled to get into any type of rhythm on the offensive end of the floor. The Golden Eagles shot 28-percent, shooting 7-of-25 from the field, while the Flames shot slightly better at 30-percent on 11-of-36.
In the second half, the game opened up a bit, with both teams looking to push the tempo of the game. With just over six minutes remaining in the game, the Flames had extended their lead to 14 points, before La Sierra staged a feverish comeback. The Golden Eagles fought their way back to cut the lead to a one-possession game on two separated occasions.
With under a minute to play, the Golden Eagles found themselves down by a basket and had a shot to tie or take the lead, but Garrett Kiefer's three point attempt from the far corner was just a fraction long and bounced of the back rim. That would be as close as the Golden Eagles would get, as the Flames went on to close the game out at the free throw line.
The men's basketball team falls to 4-22 with the loss. They will be back in action on Thursday when they host West Coast Baptist College. The Golden Eagles men's basketball team will play their final home game of the season on Sunday, February 10. The team will host New Hope Christian College and also honor their seniors prior to the game.
