San Marcos, CA - The baseball team returned to San Marcos this afternoon to complete the weekend series against the Cougars.  The Golden Eagles, looking to get in the win column, were finally able to break through, settling for a split with San Marcos.

After suffering four losses by a one-run margin, the Golden Eagles scored three runs in the 8th inning to gain their first win of the season in Game 1, with a final score of 3-1.

La Sierra was in position to sweep the Cougars, who defeated the Golden Eagles 8-1 on Friday afternoon, but San Marcos answered with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 7th.

The Golden Eagles were held to just three hits in each of the two games this afternoon.  With La Sierra trailing 1-0 entering the 8th inning, Marquise Kidd delivered a pinch-hit two-run double down the left field line, scoring Josh Fernandez and Ben Vasquez.  Jordan Bray followed with a pinch-hitting sacrifice bunt that scored Joe Mascarenaz.

Starting pitched Tyler Sirna did not factor into the decision for the Golden Eagles, but pitched a solid six innings, giving up one run on eight hits and no walks.  Freshmen Michael Gonzales (1-0) picks up his first career win after pitching the final three innings.  Gonzales gave up just one hit, one base-on-balls with two strikeouts.

In Game 2, the Golden Eagles once again picked up another solid pitching performance from their starter David Lara Oliveras, but were unable to hang on to the lead.

The Cougars scored a run in the 2nd and 4th innings and carried a 2-0 lead into the top of the 7th, when La Sierra's offense finally broke through against the Cougars pitching staff.

Kidd once again factored into the action when he entered the game to pinch hit for Jake Magness to start the inning.  Kidd reached base on an error by the San Marcos shortstop.  Kidd was subsequently lifted when Brian Burgin entered the game to pinch run for him.

Ryan Diaz followed with a single and James Rael loaded the bases when he reached base on an error by the first baseman trying to field his bunt.

After Burgin was called out at home on a fielder's choice, Vasquez picked up an RBI by grounding out to third base and scoring Diaz.  With two outs and runners in scoring position, Michael Hinojos gave the Golden Eagles the lead with a two-run single, scoring Harrison Guiol and Fernandez.

La Sierra was now in position to sweep the Cougars and hand them their first two losses of the season, but were ultimately unable to hang on to the lead.  With one out in the bottom of the 7th, Marcus Meraz singled to tie the score and advanced to scoring position on an error.  After Rich Montanez grounded out for the second out in the inning, Tyler Bernard scored the winning run with a walk-off single to end the game.  The game ended in the 7th due to the lack of daylight.

Logan Duran (0-2) is charged with the loss while Kevin Hilton pitched a complete game for the Cougars, giving up no earned runs on three hits in the victory.

La Sierra is now 1-12 on the season.  They will travel the short distance to Cal Baptist on Thursday and Friday before returning home to host Ashford University on Sunday afternoon.
