Riverside, CA - Looking to carry momentum from their weekend split at San Marcos this past weekend, the Golden Eagles baseball team made the short trek to the other side of town to play California Baptist University this afternoon.
The Lancers defeated La Sierra by a final of 3-1. Today's game was the first game of a two-game series between the two teams. The second game will be played tomorrow afternoon.
The Lancers took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning. After Luke Esquerra reached base on a walk an subsequently stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball, Antonio Chavarria drove him in with a two-out infield single.
Cal Baptist scored another run in the 5th inning, before the Golden Eagles cut the lead in half with a run in the 7th inning.
Jake Magness led the inning off with by reaching on a sharply hit ball that was ruled an error but just as easily could have been ruled a base hit. Ryan Diaz moved Magness into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI single by right-fielder Ben Vasquez.
The Golden Eagles had the tying run at third base, but were unable to drive the run in.
The Lancers scored an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th inning and secured the victory by retiring La Sierra in order, in the 9th inning.
Vazquez had two of the Golden Eagles five hits and finished the game going 2 for 3 with one RBI.
Caleb Dirks (1-0) picked up the win for the Lancers while Logan Duran (0-3) was charged with the loss for the Golden Eagles.
The two teams will match-up again tomorrow afternoon, at 2pm, on the campus of California Baptist University in Riverside, CA.
