Riverside, CA - After a tough week of final exams, the Golden Eagles softball team hit the field looking to shed some the stress encountered during the last week of the quarter. On this afternoon, La Sierra played host to NCAA Division III Williams College out of Williamstown, Massachusetts. The Ephs, translated to Purple Cows, were completing their west coast swing with today's doubleheader at La Sierra.
The Golden Eagles got on the board first in the second inning, with an RBI single by Aleena Bahling that scored Taylor Griego. It was the lone hit of the game for La Sierra.
They held on to that lead until the fourth inning, when the Ephs struck for five runs on five hits in the inning.
It would end up being the last inning that either team would score a run or get a hit, as Williams went on to win Game 1 by a final of 5-1.
Game 2 had a different feel altogether, with each team scoring a run in the first inning.
The Golden Eagles scored their run on an RBI double by Monique Villasenor, scoring Violet McGowen.
The Ephs came back to score two runs in the third inning followed by three runs in the fourth inning. Williams was one hit away from potentially winning the game through the mercy rule.
Leading 7-1 heading into the seventh inning the Ephs were able to push another run across for an 8-1 lead going into the last half of the inning.
But the Golden Eagles were not about to go quietly.
The bottom of the inning started off with Sabrina Cerda reaching base on a walk, followed by a base hit by Griego. After two consecutive strikeouts, Diamond Turner singled to load the bases. Cerda subsequently scored on a wild pitch and Ali Rio reached base on a walk to load the bases once again. McGowen followed with an RBI single and Villasenor picked up an RBI by reaching base on a walk. With the lead now cut to 8-4, Bahling entered the game as a pinch-hitter and lined a double down the left field line scoring Rio and McGowen. Villasenor scored from third base by stealing home cutting the lead to 8-7. After Cerda reached by getting hit by the ball, Bahling, who was representing the tying run at third base, tied the game by reaching home on a wild pitch. On the same play, Cerda advanced to second base but was caught trying to advance to third base on the play, ending the inning.
The game would progress to extra innings where the Ephs scored three runs on one hit in their half of the eighth inning while the Golden Eagles were only able to puch across one run, losing the game by a final of 11-9.
La Sierra will be back at it on Sunday afternoon when they play host to Simpson University. The first game of the afternoon doubleheader will start at 1pm.
