Riverside, Calif. - The Golden Eagles men's soccer team opened their season by hosting Vanguard University this evening, at La Sierra University. The two teams played to a scoreless tie for the first 41 minutes of play until the Lions broke through with a goal just before the half.
Luke Kadillak, assisted by Brian Way, gave the Lions a 1-0 halftime lead scoring in the 41st minute.
Vanguard's Andrew Sullivan extended the lead by scoring a goal off of a corner kick in the 73rd minute. Way notched his second assist of the game on the goal by Sullivan.
Jesus Fregoso scored a late goal with just over a minute to play, sneaking the ball into the bottom right corner of the net, on an assist by Samuel Nicanor.
Despite being held scoreless, the Golden Eagles outshot the Lions 15-10 in total shots, with each team tallying six shots on goal.
Senior midfielder Jonas Ornelas led La Sierra with four total shots, three of which were shots on goal.
Next up for the men's soccer team will be their first of two northern California trips, for their first two Cal Pac Conference games. The Golden Eagles will open conference play at William Jessup, next Wednesday, followed by a conference match at Pacific Union College, on Friday afternoon.
La Sierra's next home match will be a non-conference match-up with Biola University, on September 10.
