Angwin, Calif. - Looking to carry the momentum from their straight set victory over William Jessup last night, the Golden Eagles visited Pacific Union (7-6, 0-2) tonight, pushing their conference record to 3-0 with a straight set win over the Pioneers, 25-15, 25-19, 25-20.
A week ago tonight, it took the Golden Eagles (8-4, 3-0) five sets to defeat the Pioneers, after a slow start. Pacific Union won the first two sets before the Golden Eagles stormed back to win the final three sets to win the match.
Showing signs of learning from their past, the Golden Eagles took complete control of the match in the first set. They collected 13 of their 26 kills in the first set, with a hitting percentage of .357.
La Sierra cruised to a second set victory with the help of the Pioneers hitting errors and their play at the net.
The Pioneers had 20 hitting errors in the match and finished with a hitting percentage of only .087.
The Golden Eagles controlled the net, with 19.5 blocks, led by Lina Semaia who finished with 5.5 blocks.
The Pioneers did jump out to an early 5-0 lead in the third set, but the Golden Eagles chipped away and never looked back after catching the Pioneers at 10-10.
Lina Semaia led the Golden Eagles with 11 kills in addition to her 5.5 blocks. Setter Colleen Stafford finished with 25 assists. And Chantal Washington pitched in with seven digs.
Sarah Cusick led the Pioneers with 10 kills.
The Golden Eagles will travel up Interstate 5, to Redding, California, for their third match in as man days. They will take on Simpson University (2-7, 0-0) tomorrow night, at 7:30pm. Tomorrow night's match will be the first of two matches between the two teams this season. Last season, the Golden Eagles defeated the Red Hawks in four sets in their only meeting.
