Riverside, Calif. - Still riding high from their victory over Simpson University just over a week ago, the Golden Eagles earned their fourth conference win of the season by defeating Menlo College 2-1, on a beautiful, yet breezy, Friday afternoon.
Both teams had to battle some stronger than normal winds. But even though the teams did have to manage the breezy conditions, the wind did not play a major factor in the match.
Menlo College had the first scoring opportunity, when the Golden Eagles defender Sid Dube was called for a questionable foul inside the penalty box, awarding a penalty kick to the Oaks in the 27th minute. But goalkeeper Alonso Lara guessed right, and made an incredible save, diving to his right to keep the match scoreless.
The Golden Eagles struck first when Roman Santiago connected with Edgar Padilla, who found himself one-on-one with Menlo goalkeeper Martin De La Torre, and put it into the net for a 1-0 lead, in the 35th minute.
La Sierra scored their second goal seven minutes later when Santiago made a couple of nice moves to slash his way through the a couple of Menlo defenders near the right corner. After creating some space for himself, Santiago crossed a ball to Darren Bonanken who put the header in the back of the net for a 2-0 lead that the Golden Eagles would take into the half.
In the second half, both teams exchanged a handful of scoring chances, with neither team scoring until Menlo struck for their only goal of the match, by Andrew Cota, off of a free kick just above the penalty box.
Goalkeeper Alonso Lara (4-3) finished with six saves on the afternoon. The Oaks outshot La Sierra 14-9 with a total of 10 shots on goal. The Golden Eagles finished with five shots on goal, led by Padilla with two.
The Golden Eagles, now 4-3 (4-1 Cal Pac), will travel to Soka University looking to keep pace in the Cal Pac south division, this coming Tuesday. The team would like to avenge their 2-1 loss to the Lions a little over than a week ago. La Sierra will return home on October 8, against Marymount University, in another Cal Pac south division match-up.
