Eagle Rock, Calif. - Taking a break from conference play, the women's volleyball team travelled to Occidental College this evening, where they were fortunate to pull out a five set match victory over the Tigers (20-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 15-6).
Occidental jumped out on top by collecting 17 kills in Set 1 to only nine kills for the Golden Eagles. La Sierra rebounded in Set 2, tallying 14 kills and capitalizing on 11 attack errors by the Tigers. Oxy found themselves down 23-14 before fighting their way back with eight straight points, cutting the lead to one at 23-22, but the Golden Eagles were able to stop the run in time to secure the set victory.
The back-and-forth affair continued with each team splitting the next two sets, forcing a fifth and final set. In Set 5, the Golden Eagles jumped out to the early lead and didn't look back. Robyn Miller served the first seven points, as La Sierra enjoyed a 7-0 lead to begin the decisive set, that they would eventually go on to win 15-6.
Outside hitter Lupe Garcia led the way with 18 kills, 18 digs, and three block assists. Miller added 12 kills and a team high 19 digs, with two block assists. Lina Semaia pitched in with 11 kills.
Setter Colleen Stafford quarterbacked the offense with 43 assists to go along with 13 digs and three block assists of her own. Sasha Birt-Moody also contributed with six kills with only one error and four solo blocks and four block assists.
As a team, the Golden Eagles controlled the play at the net with a total of 16 team blocks to nine team blocks for Oxy.
La Sierra improves to 15-6 with the win. After a week off from Cal Pac play, the Golden Eagles will play one more non-conference match before finishing the week off with two conference matches. On Wednesday, La Sierra will host Westmont College, followed by back-to-back home matches against Simpson University and William Jessup Univeristy, on Friday and Saturday. The Golden Eagles are currently 9-0 at home this season (10-0 dating back to last season).
