Riverside, Calif. - On Friday afternoon, the Golden Eagles were able to rebound nicely, by defeating Simpson University in three straight sets, after losing their first home match of the season earlier in the week.
In the first set, the Golden Eagles used a few moderate scoring runs to pull away for the 25-17 victory. It was in the second set that La Sierra steamrolled their way to a 25-7 win, to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
A spirited William Jessup squad returned to the floor in the third set, and their determination paid off, as they earned the set victory and pushed the match to a fourth set. But even though the Warriors did everything in their power to make the Golden Eagles earn it, La Sierra prevailed in the fourth set, 25-19.
The Golden Eagles were forced to play without one of their leaders in kills, when Robyn Miller caught an elbow in the nose in a play at the net, early in the first set.
Colleen Stafford had a great night with 31 assists, 11 digs, and eight kills from the setter position, in addition to four block assists. Lina Semaia led the team with 12 kills. And Abby Latuhoi and Kalie Labrie each added seven kills. Sophomore Sasha Birt-Moody contributed with six block assists and one solo block.
Jennah Richmond and Noelle Mueller each had six kills for the Warriors. Libero Molly Collins led all players with 20 digs. The Warriors played the match without their leader in kills, Sara Hickenbottom, who was on the bench wearing a boot on her foot.
With the win, La Sierra is now 17-7 on the season and 9-1 in Cal Pac play. They will now turn their attention to the much anticipated re-match with Menlo College, this coming Thursday. The Oaks are the only team that has defeated the Golden Eagles in conference play. Thursday night will also be "Breast Cancer Awareness Night". If you plan to attend you are encouraged to wear pink. The match is scheduled to start at 7pm.
