Merced, Calif. - In their first year of competition in the Cal Pac Conference, the Golden Eagles women's volleyball team clinched the Cal Pac regular season title with today's 3-0 win at UC Merced. In doing so, the women's volleyball team also secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Cal Pac Volleyball Tournament.
Even though Menlo can tie the Golden Eagles with 11 Cal Pac wins, the Golden Eagles hold the tiebreaker by having won five game/sets to only three for Menlo.
The Golden Eagles showed up for business and left no doubt about what was on the line. La Sierra won each of the first two sets in convincing fashion, 25-12 and 25-11.
La Sierra was not looking to extend the match in any way, and was able to close things out with a 20-25 victory in the third and deciding set.
Lina Semaia led all players with 14 kills, only four errors, on 25 attempts (.400). Robyn Miller added five kills and four other players pitched in with three kills each.
Sasha Birt-Moody led all players with three block assists and was joined at the net by Semaia who added two block assists.
Setter Colleen Stafford led the offense with 29 assists, along with seven digs. Siao Malepeai also contributed seven digs in the effort.
Erin Miller finished with a season high four service aces. And the Golden Eagles as a team tallied nine service aces in the match.
The Bobcats struggled to find a rhythm on offense as they finished with a hitting percentage of -.011, with 21 kills, 22 errors, on 87 attempts.
The Golden Eagles have concluded conference play for now and will set their sights on their final two regular season matches. Tuesday night, at 7:30pm, will be "Senior Night" for the Golden Eagles when they host St. Katherine's in a scrimmage match. They will close the regular season on the road in a Friday afternoon match at San Diego Christian.
