Riverside, Calif. - After taking the week off for final exams the women's basketball team was back in action tonight, playing host to Pomona Pitzer College. The Golden Eagles were slow out of the starting gate, but finished the game with a flurry to steal the victory, 67-63, in their first home game in three weeks.
La Sierra struggled to gain their footing and find their rhythm in the first half, as the Sagehens dominated the Golden Eagles on the offensive boards. The Golden Eagles didn't help themselves out by committing 15 turnovers. And the Sagehens secured a 31-24 lead to take in to the locker room at the half.
In the first ten minutes of the second half, it seemed as though every attempt to cut into Pomona Pitzer's lead was turned back. At the 9:30 mark of the second half, a free throw by Jenn Okonkwo pushed the lead to 45-35. But over the next three and a half minutes the Golden Eagles used a 16-2 scoring run to erase the 10-point lead and take a 51-47 lead.
To their credit, the Sagehens didn't fold, as they fought their way back with a 7-0 run to regain the lead, 54-51. The Golden Eagles answered with a 10-2 run, pushing their lead to 61-56, lead they would not relinquish, on the way to their fourth win of the season.
Shelby Madigan had an efficient game for the Golden Eagles, leading the team with 20 points and eight rebounds, on 6-of-11 shooting, and no turnovers. Natalia Hawthorne added 14 points and seven rebounds and five steals, while Brittani Walker finished with 12 points and seven rebounds of her own, including three steals.
Tonight was the first of four straight home games for the women's basketball team. They will return to the court on Monday evening for a non-conference match-up with Northern New Mexico. Monday's games is scheduled for a 5:00pm start.
