Vallejo, Calif. - The women's basketball team capped off a three games in three days stretch, with a memorable 57-56 win at Cal State Maritime Academy. After letting a double-digit lead get away from them in the final minutes of the game, Natalia Hawthorne's 3-pointer with .7 seconds left vaulted the Golden Eagles to victory.
The Golden Eagles were in complete control of the game from the beginning. After the Keelhaulers scored the first basket of the game, the Golden Eagles used a 15-2 run, to take an early 15-4 lead just before the midway point of the first half.
The Keelhaulers chipped away at the lead, finishing the half with a 12-6 run and cutting the Golden Eagles lead to 26-22 at the half.
The Golden Eagles started the second half similar to how they started the first half and pushed their lead to double-digits (33-23) in the first few minutes of the half. A 3-point make by Joirdan Jones gave the La Sierra a 42-29 lead with 12:24 remaining in the game.
After the Keelhaulers trimmed the lead to nine points (42-33) on a basket by Shante Sands, the Golden Eagles quickly pushed the lead to 47-33, their largest lead of the game, on two made free throws by Brittani Walker with just over eight minutes remaining in the game.
Over the next seven minutes the Keelhaulers used a 21-7 run to tie the score at 54-54, catching the Golden Eagles with 1:06 to play.
On the Golden Eagle's next possession, senior guard Joirdan Jones attacked the basket, only to have her go-ahead attempt go just an inch too long and glance off the back rim, which was rebounded by Cal Maritime.
After erasing a 14-point lead over a seven-minute stretch, the Keelhaulers took their second lead of the game, since scoring the first basket of the game, when Jordan Mootz connected for the go-ahead basket with 11 seconds remaining in the game.
The Keelhaulers were now in the driver's seat with three fouls to give. Maritime used their three fouls and shaved a total of six seconds off the game clock. With 5 second remaining, no fouls to give and no timeouts left, the stage was set.
With the clock counting down, senior guard Natalia Hawthorne launched a shot from approximately 35 feet that splashed through the net for the victory. The Keelhaulers had a final attempt from half court that was off target with .7 seconds left.
Joirdan Jones led the Golden Eagles with 20 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Hawthorne added 14 points, six rebounds, four steals, and three assists.
Victoria Lowe tallied a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three steals. And Shelby Madigan pitched in with nine total rebounds in addition to six points, three assists, and two steals.
The women's basketball team improved to 3-2 in Cal Pac play (9-10 overall). The Golden Eagles will take a break from conference play when they travel to The Master's College this Thursay. Their next two conference games will be at home, versus Simpson University and William Jessup University, on January 16 and 18.
