Riverside, Calif. - The men's basketball team played host to Pacifica College tonight, looking to jump back into the win column. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles were on the wrong side of a buzzer beater, when Pacifica cashed in on a 3-point shot at the buzzer, for the 55-52 win.
It was a game that started out with the Golden Eagles finding themselves down early. With 12:31 remaining in the first half, the Gladiators had pushed out to a 14-4 lead.
Over the next four minutes, the Golden Eagles quickly answered with a 10-1 run of their own, cutting the lead to 15-14. Pacifica was able to push the lead back up to nine points, settling for a 31-26 lead at the halftime break.
As the second half got underway, the two teams exchanged baskets until La Sierra put together a 9-0 run to take a 44-41 lead, their first lead of the game. The Golden Eagles held the lead for approximately seven minutes until the Gladiators fought their way back to regain the lead with just less than five minutes to play.
A basket by Garrett Kiefer tied the score at 50-50, followed up by a Daveon Woods bucket to take a 52-50 lead with just over three minutes remaining.
But a field goal by Alex Mendiola tied the two teams at 52 points apiece, setting the stage for Horace Nguyen who connected on the game winner in the final second.
Wolfgang Wood led the team in scoring with 13 points and six rebounds. Daveon Woods added 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
Taylor Scharffenberg pitched in with 18 rebounds, while Kiefer tallied 12 rebounds to go along with six rebounds.
With the loss, the Golden Eagles drop to 3-17 on the season. They will play another non-conference game this weekend before diving back into Cal Pac play next weekend. La Sierra will host The Master's College this Saturday night, at 7:30pm.
