Riverside, Calif. - After suffering a lopsided, 23-2, defeat in Game 1, the Golden Eagles softball team picked themselves up and fell just short Game 2, in an upset bid of No. 1 Concordia University (CA). Concordia went on to defeat La Sierra, 3-2, in extra innings.
Concordia jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Hannah Howell scored Nicole Chavez on a sacrifice fly in the top half of the 3rd inning.
They held the lead until the 5th inning when the Golden Eagles tied the score at 1-1. Brittany Martinez reached base, with one out, after being hit by a pitch. Katie Witherby followed with a double to right-centerfield, scoring Martinez. The Golden Eagles had a chance to take the lead, but the threat was thwarted when Witherby, who advanced to third base on a single by Mercedes Gasparovic, was caught in a rundown between third base and home plate.
Concordia threatened in the top of the 7th, but pitcher Emily Campos struck out Howell to end the threat, with the potential winning run on third base.
After a scoreless bottom half of the inning, the game moved into extra innings where Concordia struck first with two runs in the top half of the inning, taking a 3-1 lead.
But the Golden Eagles weren't about to go quietly. With Witherby starting out the inning on second base, Gasparovic reached base on a fielder's choice with Witherby tagged out trying to advance to third base. On a head's up play, Gasparovic advanced to second base on the throw. After Campos flied out for the second out of the inning, Gasparovic stole third base and scored on a two-out single by Cynthia Martinez. But that would prove to be as close as La Sierra would get in their attempt at the upset.
Campos pitched all eight innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on only two hits, with five strikeouts and six walks.
The Golden Eagles softball team drops to 1-5 on the season. The team will return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Biola University for a doubleheader, starting at 1pm.
