Riverside, Calif. - The women's softball teams defeated Vanguard University, 4-2, this afternoon at La Sierra University. Game 2 was ultimately suspended due to darkness and the approaching sunset. At the time the game was suspended, the Lions were leading 8-5 in the bottom of the 5th inning.
In the only game of record for the afternoon, Aleena Bahling pitched a complete game victory for La Sierra. Bahling gave up two runs, both in the 1st inning, on seven hits, with three strikeouts and three walks.
The Lions jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning, before the Golden Eagles tied the game at 2-2, with two run in the bottom of the 4th inning.
Bahling helped herself out at the plate, by knocking a single to left that scored Erika Basurto and Brittany Martinez.
In the 5th inning, used a total of two hits to score two runs. After Monique Villasenor reached base on a walk, Brianna Gutierrez and Erika Basurto hit back-to-back singles to load the bases, with one out in the inning.
After a strikeout, for the second out of the inning, Emily Campos entered the game as a pinch-hitter and earned a walk to score the winning run.
Bahling was subsequently hit by a pitch, which gave the Golden Eagles an insurance run, but they wouldn't need it, as La Sierra was able to keep Vanguard off the board and secure the 4-2 victory.
Both teams each finished with seven hits in the game. Bahling led her team from the pitcher's mound, but also led her team at the plate, tallying three RBI's on a 1-for-2 day.
The Golden Eagles are now 4-11 on the season. They will be out of action next week, as they prepare for their next contest, on Friday, February 28. La Sierra will host Lake Superior State, next Friday, starting at 1pm. The Lakers are an NCAA Division II program, from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
