The La Sierra Women's Basketball team, behind a 21 point and 7 rebound effort from Freshman Guard Stephaine Bryant, defeated the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer College 71-56 Thursday night at La Sierra University. The Golden Eagles, after trailing 2-0 at the outset of the game, went on runs of 10 and 14 points to pull away from the visiting Sagehens and cruised to a 15 point win.
Pomona-Pitzer, a NCAA Div.III team from the SCIAC conference made it interesting by closing a 14 point deficit to only 6 points at half, 35-29, and closed that to only 3 within the first two minutes of the second half.
However, La Sierra's speed and proficient outside shooting proved to be to much for the Sagehens to handle as La Sierra pulled away to improve to 3-3 at the friendly confines of the Alumni Pavilion. The Golden Eagles shot an impressive 38 percent from behind the arc and a stellar 91 percent from the charity stripe to seal the victory. In addition to Bryant's 21 points, Freshman guard Natalia Hawthorne added 16 points on 4 of 8 from 3-point territory and Freshman Vicky Lowe added 15 points and a team high 9 rebounds, including a season high 7-7 from the free-throw line. With 4 players in double figures, Coach Thorson was guardedly optimistic of the outcome, "We didn't play to our true potential" said the Head Coach, " but we did get the win and with each win, comes another step in our maturation process."
Pomona-Pitzer was led by Emi Hashizume, with 16 points and Cristina Sheckler with 12 points and a team high 8 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles travel to Whittier College this Saturday night to take on the Poets, that game will tip at 7:30.
