The La Sierra women's basketball team went down to defeat on Friday afternoon at the hands of the visiting Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific University. In a contest that was close all night long, the Sunbirds were able to pull away and record a 74-60 victory. It was a see-saw affair that saw the game tied on 8 separate occasions. La Sierra was hindered by a sub-standard effort at the free-throw line, shooting a miserable 50% for the game, including 5-14 in the second half. "You cannot win close ball games shooting that poorly from the free-throw line" said coach Thorson, whose golden eagles dropped to 5-12 on the season, and 3-4 at home. "A 5 point game with 3 minutes to go, and we miss 6 consecutive free-throws, just pathetic" said the coach. "We are a young team, that has to learn to close out games when given the chance" said Thorson. Fresno Pacific shot 78% from the free-throw line to seal the victory. The golden eagles were led by Freshman Joirdan Jones with 17 points, but only 2 of those 17 were tallied in the 2nd half. The golden eagles also saw their shooting percentages plummet in the 2nd half, including going 1-9 from behind the arc to end the game. "We are definitely improving each game, we just need to learn to play when the game is on the line" Thorson said. The Golden Eagles next take the floor in the Biola Holiday Classic tournament, facing Midland Lutheran on Nebraska on Tuesday, Dec. 28 at Hope University in Fullerton at 1 pm. The tournament continues on Wednesday and Thursday, with games vs The Masters college and Azusa Pacific, the number 2 ranked team in the nation. The golden eagles will face The Masters College on Wednesday, Dec. 29 at 1 pm, and then play Azusa Pacific University on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 5 pm. Both Wed and Thurs games will be played at Biola University.
