La Sierra Women soar high and win the inagural MLK Classic

The Golden Eagle Women played there final game of the MLK Classic Monday morning and soundly defeated the Knights of Southwestern Adventist University, of Keene, Tx. 96-52, for their sixth win in a row. The Golden Eagles were led by Freshman Natalia Hawthorne's 23 points on 9-19 from the floor, as well as 3 of 9 from downtown. Junior Ashley Baumgaertel finished with 18 points and 6 rebounds as La Sierra had 5 players in double figures. La Sierra's defense forced the Knights into 35 turn-overs and that led to 36 fast break points. Then Golden Eagles shot 49% from the floor and 30% from behind the arc. For the tournament the Ladies also shot a very impressive 80% from the free-throw line, making 32 of 40 attempts.
With the win, the La Sierra Women's basketball team have tied the school record of 11 victories in a single season, matching the mark set in 2005-06. Asst. Coach Sivertsen was a guard on that team. The Golden Eagles next play at home on Saturday night, Jan. 29, at 6:30 pm vs. Southwestern College of Phoenix, Az, as part of a double header that will feature the Mens' game immediatly following the ladies' game. This will be fan appreciation/parent's night for the Women's team. All family and friends are encouraged to attend and support the Ladies as they attempt to set a new record in a season of unprecidented success!
