The Golden Eagles women's basketball team split their two Cal Pac conference games this past weekend. For the first time in conference play, La Sierra went on the road, where they defeated California Maritime Academy, 71-65, then fell to the University of California – Merced, 82-60. The women's basketball team is now 2-3 in Cal Pac play (6-12 overall).
In Thursday's win over the Keelhaulers, the Golden Eagles were able to come from behind with a strong final quarter to steal the victory away from the home team. The Keelhualers took a 32-31 lead into the half and increased it to a 58-52 advantage by the end of the third quarter. But the Golden Eagles outscored Maritime, 19-7 in the final quarter of play to walk away with the victory.
Elsie Mejia led the team in scoring with 16 points, with Madison Federici adding 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Two other players, Celina Calderon and Alexis Davis, also scored in double figures, as they finished with 12 points and 11 points, respectively.
Davis was one rebound shy of a double-double, along with Federici who was two rebounds shy of her first double-double of the season.
On Saturday night, the team was at UC Merced, where a slow start saw them playing catch-up for most of the game.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 18-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. By the halftime buzzer, Merced held a comfortable 48-25 lead. A determined Golden Eagles squad came out of the locker room and cut the lead to 58-47 but that would be as close as things would get, as the Bobcats regained control in the final quarter of play, and would go on to the 82-60 victory.
Calderon and Amanda Sanchez led La Sierra in scoring with 11 points, followed by Davis who finished with 10 points on the night.
Davis, DeShields Fajardo, and Sanchez accounted for 21 of the team's 28 rebounds, with each player collecting seven rebounds apiece.
The team returns home to host Embry-Riddle University, on Thursday, followed by a Saturday night match-up with Benedictine University.
