Women's Basketball Fundraising Gala
Women's Basketball - Thu, Mar. 10, 2011
April 17, 2011, 6:30 at Pacific Palms Resort and Golf Club
Dear Alumni and Friends of La Sierra University,
I hope this email finds you healthy and prosperous in 2011. I am writing to inform you of the exciting events happening here in the Athletics department at La Sierra University, specifically within the much improved Women's Basketball Program.
My name is Eric Thorson, and I am the first year Head Coach of Women's Basketball. As you may or may not know, the Athletic Dept. at La Sierra has undergone massive changes in the last year, starting with a brand new, state-of -the-art website, www.lsugoldeneagles.com. If you haven't had a chance to visit the site, I highly recommend doing so as soon as possible. You will find individual team information, schedules, rosters, scores and video footage of recently contested games. It's definitely the place to go for all your Golden Eagle news!
The Women's basketball team is off and running. Coming off a dismal 0-24 in 2009-10, the Athletic Administration saw fit to make sweeping changes in the coaching staff. I was hired to lead the program and along with me, Asst. Coach Ashley Haggerty and Asst. Coach Francesca Sivertsen were also tabbed to reinvigorate the program, and reinvigorate we have! As you read this, we are completing a season in which we set a school record of 12 wins. At the tail end of our season we had a stretch of 6 wins in a row, and in doing so, captured the first annual MLK Classic Tournament championship by defeating Oakwood, Andrews and Southwestern Universities in Huntsville, Alabama. We also played a very impressive six of the top 15 ranked NAIA teams in the nation. With seven freshman and three Junior College transfers, along with two returning juniors, the La Sierra Golden Eagles expect to be even more competitive in 2011-12.
Running a successful basketball program is not only a very difficult and time consuming task, but one that requires a great deal of support from the community, as well as the Alumni. As a true collegiate program, the funding needs are substantial. We are travelling to Montana, Utah, Oregon, Arizona and Washington State in 2011-12. Once again, we will be participating in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund Classic tournament hosted by the Montana State University Northern in Havre, Montana. Travel expenses, athletic scholarship monies, uniforms and coaches' salaries are a few of the ongoing needs within the program. I'm sure you will agree with me that a strong athletic department only adds to the collegiate experience and is a major part of any successful university.
I would like to take this opportunity to invite you and your guests to a formal, catered dinner to support the La Sierra Women's Basketball Program. This event will take place on Sunday night, the 17th of April at 6:30 p.m., at the Pacific Palms resort and golf club in Industry Hills, Ca. (www.pacificpalmsresort.com) this evening will feature a "California Coast Line" buffet. You will have five themed stations serving food from various regions of California. Before dinner you will have the chance to meet the Athletic Administration, the Coaches and the Student-Athletes from the Women's Basketball Program. After dinner, guest speaker, Kevin O'Neill, USC Men's Basketball Head Coach, will discuss the inner workings of a successful collegiate athletic program. Coach O'Neill has coached at the NCAA Division 1 level, as well as the NBA, with the New York Knicks, Indiana Pacers, Toronto Raptors and the Detroit Pistons. Coach O'Neill will not disappoint you with his insight.
The cost of this evening is $175.00 per person. You may also purchase a table of 10 for $1500.00. You will also have the opportunity to stay at the resort that night and play golf with the coaching staff the next morning. The net proceeds raised from this event will go directly to fund the Women's Basketball Program at La Sierra University as we continue the building process.
Your support of our program will not go unnoticed as we will recognize each donor with their names in our upcoming 2011-12 season brochure.
I encourage you to RSVP by sending the information sheet to me. If you prefer, you may register online at www.lasierraconnect.org/womensbb. If paying by credit card, you may call Shannon Vielmann at 951-785-2358.
If you have any questions, I can be contacted directly at [email protected], or by phone in the Women's basketball office at 951-785-2603, or by cell phone at 714-270-9621. I hope to see you all on the 17th of April. Thank you for your support.
