Coach Derek Robbins enters his third season at La Sierra University, the Golden Eagles men's basketball program has seen tremendous growth, with over 80 recruits trying out for the men's summer league team. This is truly a blessing for the interest in our program, and the chance to share time as coach, athlete and student. Coach Robbins is grateful to have this special opportunity to coach basketball at La Sierra, and he believes that you can compete in sports but at the same time, honor and glorify God.
Over the past 20 plus years, he has coached and worked with players ranging from high school, to AAU top basketball talent. At both levels he has achieved success, and watched some of his former players at the college and professional levels. Coach Robbins earned a bachelors degree in Kinesiology in 2001 from California Baptist University in Riverside California. Coach Robbins played at Los Angeles Power house, Banning High school for Coach Chris Ferragamo, who had the biggest influence on his life, and is still a tremendous blessing to him today. One of Coach Ferragamo quotes to his players was, enthusiasm is the force that creates momentum, be enthuse with your life, and great things will occur. This is something that coach Robbins shares with his players today. Coach Robbins was also a standout football player at Riverside Community College, as well as tryouts in the National Football League and, the United States Football League (USFL), but his carrier was cut short due to injury.
The Lord has blessed his family with a wonderful wife (Lori) and five children (Johnny, Gabriel, Miles, Ryan, and Megan). They are all thrilled with the opportunity he has been given to impact lives through sports and the Lord.
Primous married and has four kids. His kids are Nate Ill, Dorien, Treyvon and Xylia. In 1998, he and his family moved to Corona.
Primous' coaching career began in Orange County, CA 1997 coaching football and basketball for youth sports, girls and boys. During this time, he was a CIF certified basketball official for 7 years. He coached his kids in basketball and football. Then in 2005 he started coaching at the high school level, freshman football and junior varsity girls basketball at Corona High School for one season.
In 2006 a new high school was opening in Corona - Eastvale, CA. I took the opportunity to coach at the varsity level programs for football and basketball at Eleanor Roosevelt High School. I developed my style of coaching techniques under the leadership of Varsity Basketball Head Coach Ramone Neal. This style of coaching is a very intense style for practicing, playing and coaching.
Primous' current objectives include working as a team with the coaching staff at La Seirra University with Head Coach Derek Robbins to produce well-balanced, well-rounded, respectful basketball players that excel in academics, sports & life and to fine tune and further a player's working knowledge of the game. As a coach he is consistently updating his knowledge of the game by attending coaching clinics and listening to various coaches speak. He loves to coach basketball.
Coach Frank Estell III, grew up in Southern California. He has played organized sports since the age of eight. Although he eventually grew into basketball, he also has competed in, baseball, football, and track. He graduated from La Sierra High School here in Riverside, CA where he played four years of basketball and ran track.
After high school, Coach Estell attended Point Loma Nazarene University and graduated with a BA in Management Information Systems. While there he played basketball and competed in the jumping events in track. In the 1999-00 season his team went 28-7 and made it to the NAIA national tournament. Coach Estell is currently 6th on Point Loma's top 10 most blocks in a career and 9th for most blocks in a game.
In 2007 Coach Estell married his wife Pam. They currently live in Corona with their two dogs Lily and Lucy.
This will be Coach Estell's first year working with basketball staff at La Sierra University. He will be coaching the forwards and centers on the fundamentals of post play. He loves the game of basketball and looks forward to learning more about coaching and developing upstanding young men both on and off the court.
