[Women's Basketball] Golden Eagles Win in Senior Night!

Ashley Baumgaertel and Melissa Bustamante led the Golden Eagles as they defeated Arizona Christian University 104-102 in overtime on the last home game of the season. This was a special night because it was the night to honor our 2 seniors who have done incredible things for our basketball program.

The Golden Eagles came out motivate and looking for a win against the Firestorms. Melissa Bustamante had 8 rebounds and 3 assists in 32 minutes. Ashley Maumgaertel added 7 rebounds and 19 points in 21 minutes.

Natalia Hawthorne led the Eagles with 32 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assist, and 7 steals. Joirdan Jones had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Britnny Walker had a huge game with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Joirdan Jones scored the last 3-point shot with 8 seconds left in over-time to win the game 104-102.

The Golden Eagles will like to Thank Melissa and Ashley for all the hard work they put into this program! Thank you seniors!

[Men's Basketball] Kenneth Penn Earns A.I.I. Player of the Week Honor!

Johnson & Wales University's Amber Salaz and La Sierra University's Kenneth Penn have earned top honors in the Association of Independent Institutions this week as Salaz has been named Female Athlete of the Week, while Penn has been named the Male Athlete of the Week.

Penn, a 6-6 senior forward, averaged 23.5 points and 17 rebounds for the Golden Eagles in a 1-1 week. Penn knocked down 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in a win over Portland Bible College and then came back with a 27-point, 18-rebound performance in a loss to California State University-San Marcos. He shot 51 percent from the field and was 11 for 18 at the free throw line, while also recording four assists and a steal in the two

The Golden Eagles men's basketball team has won 6 games straight and sits a top of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. After a very grueling road trip, playing 4 games in 5 nights, the men are happy to be home. Captain Miles Robbins said, defending our 2011 conference championship is our only goal right now; we can and will play better.

With four players in double figures and coming off a 61-58 win vs. Carroll College in Spokane, Washington, the Lady Golden Eagles defeated the No. 2 ranked Cougars of California State University San Marcos on Saturday night 69-61 at the Alumni Pavilion at La Sierra University.

The game was close at half with La Sierra holding a slim 31-26 lead. Cal. St. San Marcos came out hot in the second half and within 2 minutes had the score tied at 31-31, forcing La Sierra into an early timeout. "I felt as if the momentum we had built up at half was slipping away" said Coach Thorson. "I wanted to re-capture the initiative and not allow the Cougars to control the tempo." The Golden Eagles responded with a 14-2 run to take a 12-point lead. Sophomore guard Joirdan Jones heated up and scored 11 of the next 14 points, including three 3pt shots in succession. "Those 3's really gave us the spark we needed" said Thorson. "Joirdan really stepped up and played well when we needed it"

The Golden Eagles were led in scoring by Jones' 21 point effort, including 7 rebounds, followed by Natalia Hawthorne's 14 points. Freshman Brittani Walker added a career high 10 points and sophomore forward Victoria Lowe tossed in 11 points. Senior Center Ashley Baumgaertel added 8 points and 11 rebounds. "It was a tremendous effort all the way around" said Coach Thorson.

The Golden Eagles shot an impressive 40% from the floor, including 8 of 17 from behind the arc, and were 11 of 14 from the free throw line in the second half.

The Cougars of San Marcos were led by Sidney Dobner with 16 points and 9 rebounds.

The Golden Eagles take to the road and play at Arizona Christian University on January 28, in Phoenix, Arizona. That game tips at 7:00 pm PST.

[Women's Basketball] La Sierra Defeats Carroll College In Overtime!

Led by Sophomore guard Natalia Hawthorne's 27 points and 6 steals, the La Sierra Women's Basketball team avenged an earlier loss to Carroll College by 26 and defeated the Saints 61-58 in an overtime thriller in Spokane, Washington on Tuesday night.

Coming to the end of a 10-day, 5 game trip to the Pacific Northwest, the Golden Eagles would not be denied a victory against the Frontier conference powerhouse college. Having been defeated by 47 and 26 points in their last two games versus Carroll College the team knew it would be a tall order to defeat the Saints.

It was a 6-point game at halftime with Carroll College holding a 28-22 lead. The Golden Eagles came out hot and quickly evened the score at 32 each with a driving layup by Sophomore Victoria Lowe (14 points and 12 rebounds). It was a close game throughout the entire second half.

Carroll College took a 7-point lead into the last 2 minutes and it seemed bleak for the Golden Eagles. However, following a crucial turnover and a key 3-point basket with 6 seconds remaining, La Sierra took a 2 point lead. The Saints however scored on a layup with 1.2 seconds remaining and sent the game to overtime. In overtime the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 5 point lead led by Sophomore Joirdan Jones' deep 3-point basket with 1:24 to go. The Golden Eagles were able to hang on with crucial free-throw shooting down the stretch to claim the victory in front of over 200 Carroll College fans.

"It was a great win for our program" said Coach Thorson. "To defeat a team as talented and well-coached as Carroll College is definitely a sign that the program is headed in the right direction."

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday night, Jan.14 when they play host to the Cal State Univ. San Marcos Cougars. That game will tip-off at 7:30pm.

Natalia Hawthorne, a sophomore guard from Fontana who attended Etiwanda High School, scored 28 points -- including six three-pointers -- along with five steals and eight assists in a 61-58 overtime victory over Carroll College in Spokane, Wash. Carroll had beaten La Sierra by 26 points earlier this season, and by 47 last year.

[LSU] Holiday Hoops charity game to benefit kids

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - (www.lasierra.edu) NBA games may start on Christmas day, but La Sierra University is getting a jump on holiday basketball events.

The university's athletic department and alumni office, in conjunction with the Prevent Child Abuse of Riverside County and Riverside County Department of Social Services will host a Holiday Hoops charity basketball game on Dec. 18, at 3 p.m., in La Sierra's Alumni Pavilion. The basketball teams, La Sierra Alumni and La Sierra Staff, will face off in what is sure to be a hoppin' competition.

The La Sierra Golden Eagles men's basketball team developed the event to benefit disadvantaged children from the region who will be in attendance. Santa will make an entrance and be available for pictures, and each child will receive a Christmas present. Golden Eagles student athletes, acting as Santa's helpers, will interact with the children. Area firefighters will arrive on their fire truck, and food, candy, raffles and prizes will be offered.

Organizers request adult attendees bring a small, unwrapped toy for distribution to Riverside area disadvantaged youth. Toy donations can also be made by contacting the La Sierra University Athletic Department at 951-785-2295.

[Men's Basketball] Loyola Marymount Tournament!

The Golden Eagles Men's Basketball team will take part on the DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Centennial Classic at Loyola Marymount University. La Sierra will be one of the four team participating in this tournament. North Texas University, Loyola University, and Columbia University will also take part in this tournament.

La Sierra will start the tournament by taking on North Texas on Friday at 2pm. The Golden Eagles will take on Lion of Loyola Marymount on Saturday night at 7:30pm. The last game for the Golden Eagles will be on Sunday at 11am vs. Columbia University.

You can follow the Golden Eagles via Radio on KXLU 88.9 FM for all three game.

The La Sierra Women's basketball team, led by sophomore guard Joirdan
Jones' 20 points and 4 rebounds soundly defeated the Sagehens of
Pomona-Pitzer College on Tuesday night. Jones was 8-13 from the field
and a blistering 4-7 from behind the arc.
