La Sierra University and the Golden Eagles Athletic Department are happy to announce that they are now official members of the California Pacific Conference (Cal Pac). Dr. Larry McKinney, president of Simpson University and the Cal Pac representative on the NAIA Council of Presidents made the announcement this morning in an email to all current Cal Pac membership.

Braving above normal temperatures, thunderstorms, and extremely limited access to the technological privileges that have become a part of their daily routines, approximately 130 student-athletes congregated at Camp Cedar Falls for the Golden Eagles Inaugural Champions of Character Retreat. The retreat took place from August 10-12, in the San Bernardino mountain retreat location, just out of Big Bear. The student-athletes, coaches, and members of the Student Life family of La Sierra University, participated in various team building and character development activities during the course of the weekend.

[LSU] La Sierra Has Three NAIA Scholar Athletes

The NAIA has announced that 162 Division II Women's Basketball student-athletes and 106 Division II Men's Basketball student-athletes have been named 2012 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.

In order to be nominated by an institution, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.

Aaron Snyder played 57 games for the Golden Eagles. In those 57 games, he made over 155 FG's, including 92 three pointers. During the two years he played for La Sierra, he scored 428 points (7.5 point per game). Aaron Snyder shot 39.5% from the 3-point line and 70.3% from the Free Throw line. During the 2010-2011 season, he made six 3-point baskets in a game. In 2011, Snyder won a Press-Enterprise Performer of the Week!

Joshua Zonker missed the 2010-2011 season with an ankle injury. During the 2011-2012 season, he played in 29 games scoring 222 points, averaging 7.7 points per game. Joshua had two double-doubles this season. Against Vanguard University he score 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, his second double-double came against Portland Bible College with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Zonker averages almost 5 rebounds per game.

Ashley Baumgaertel played in 58 games during two years. Ashley scored 542 points and grabbed almost 400 rebounds in 2 years. She averaged 9.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Her biggest game for the Golden Eagles came in 2011 when she score 24 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Just like Aaron Snyder, Ashley won a Press-Enterprise Performer of the Week last season!

The Golden Eagles would like to Congratulate this 3 Student-Athletes for setting an example on and off the court! Congratulations!

Natalia Hawthorne, a sophomore from Fontana who attended Etiwanda High, scored 17 points in her team's final game of the season, a 70-35 loss to Cal State San Marcos. She finished as the leading scorer for the Golden Eagles at 13.7 points a game.

Ryan Diaz, a junior from Moreno Valley Vista Del Lago by way of Mt. San Jacinto College, leads the Golden Eagles in average (.333), slugging percentage (.600) and RBI (10).

[LSU] Holiday Hoops charity game to benefit kids

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - (www.lasierra.edu) NBA games may start on Christmas day, but La Sierra University is getting a jump on holiday basketball events.

The university's athletic department and alumni office, in conjunction with the Prevent Child Abuse of Riverside County and Riverside County Department of Social Services will host a Holiday Hoops charity basketball game on Dec. 18, at 3 p.m., in La Sierra's Alumni Pavilion. The basketball teams, La Sierra Alumni and La Sierra Staff, will face off in what is sure to be a hoppin' competition.

The La Sierra Golden Eagles men's basketball team developed the event to benefit disadvantaged children from the region who will be in attendance. Santa will make an entrance and be available for pictures, and each child will receive a Christmas present. Golden Eagles student athletes, acting as Santa's helpers, will interact with the children. Area firefighters will arrive on their fire truck, and food, candy, raffles and prizes will be offered.

Organizers request adult attendees bring a small, unwrapped toy for distribution to Riverside area disadvantaged youth. Toy donations can also be made by contacting the La Sierra University Athletic Department at 951-785-2295.

[LSU] Kurt Yaeger Memorial Golf Tournament

The Kurt Yaeger Memorial Golf Tournament was a big success. The proceeds went to benefit the La Sierra University Athletics program, specifically, to assist with athletic scholarships and the purchase of a team bus.
