[Baskeball] Hawthorne and Shaw Named All Conference

Riverside, CA - The Association of Independent Institutions (AII) has named two Golden Eagles to the Division II All Conference Basketball Team, as announced this afternoon. Natalia Hawthorne was named to the women's All Conference First Team while Bennett Shaw was named to the men's All Conference Second Team.

[Baskeball] Basketball Teams Combine for 9 Straight

Our La Sierra Basketball teams are combined 9-0 in their last nine games played. The women haven't lost a game since a New Year's Day set back (6-0 since then). Our mens team has gone 3-0 after starting their streak at the Oakwood tournament last week.

The Golden Eagle men play twice this week, Thursday night at 7:30, then they are the second half of a double header Saturday. Saturday's double header begins with the Women playing at 6:30 vs Arizona Christian College then the men play at 8:30 vs Portland Bible College.

[Baskeball] La Sierra Women soar high and win the inagural MLK Classic

The Golden Eagle Women played there final game of the MLK Classic Monday morning and soundly defeated the Knights of Southwestern Adventist University, of Keene, Tx. 96-52, for their sixth win in a row. The Golden Eagles were led by Freshman Natalia Hawthorne's 23 points on 9-19 from the floor, as well as 3 of 9 from downtown. Junior Ashley Baumgaertel finished with 18 points and 6 rebounds as La Sierra had 5 players in double figures. La Sierra's defense forced the Knights into 35 turn-overs and that led to 36 fast break points. Then Golden Eagles shot 49% from the floor and 30% from behind the arc. For the tournament the Ladies also shot a very impressive 80% from the free-throw line, making 32 of 40 attempts.

With the win, the La Sierra Women's basketball team have tied the school record of 11 victories in a single season, matching the mark set in 2005-06. Asst. Coach Sivertsen was a guard on that team. The Golden Eagles next play at home on Saturday night, Jan. 29, at 6:30 pm vs. Southwestern College of Phoenix, Az, as part of a double header that will feature the Mens' game immediatly following the ladies' game. This will be fan appreciation/parent's night for the Women's team. All family and friends are encouraged to attend and support the Ladies as they attempt to set a new record in a season of unprecidented success!

[Baskeball] LSU Basketball goes 5-1 at Oakwood Tournament

The men's (2-1) and women's (3-0) basketball teams went a collective 5-1 in Alabama at the Oakwood Adventist Tournament. Both teams were impressive in this inaugural event, posting big wins against Oakwood, Southwestern, and Andrews Universities.

Highlighting the tournament for La Sierra was the selection of Joirdan Jones as the Tournament MVP on the women's side. Victoria Lowe was named to the All-Tournament Team, and the team took home the Tournament Championship.

IT'S TIME TO VOTE!!

La Sierra has nominated two athletes for the Press Enterprise Performer of the week! Log on and vote for one of them today, voting extends until 11:30 PM tonight.

-- Taylor Scharffenberg, La Sierra men's basketball. Scharffenberg, a 6-8 freshman forward from Corona Santiago, was impressive against Division I Loyola Marymount, with 12 points (on 6-for-7 shooting) and four rebounds in 23 minutes during a 100-62 loss to the Lions.

-- Stephaine Bryant, La Sierra women's basketball. Bryant, a freshman from Riverside Jurupa Valley, had 15 points in 23 minutes, along with some tough defense, in La Sierra's 77-61 loss to San Diego Christian Saturday night.
